〽️ User-Initiated Triggers:
Letting users decide when they need help.
Duolingo
Set your own commitment
People are more likely to interact with a trigger (e.g., a push notification, or an alert), if they've set it up themselves.
For example, if you've decided that every Tuesday at 11am you're going to go for a walk, and get a push notification 10 minutes before to remind you, then you'll be more likely to react to the trigger if you created the alert.
i.e., rather than a system deciding when to alert you
✅ Churn
People may be less likely to churn if they've created (or helped influence) their own triggers.
✅ Attention & interest
People will pay more attention to a notification if they helped create it. i.e., it doesn't feel so intrusive.
✅ Effort & motivation
Imagine that you created a reminder to do exercise every Sunday morning. You'll be more motivated to act on that notification if you helped create it.
✅ Feature usage

After completing your first lesson, Duolingo will ask you to commit to your own goal.
This gives the user a sense of ownership over their commitment, rather than it being forced onto them.
